Apple’s iPad has broken all the records of online conversations related to tablets across social media space in India. NM Incite, a Nielsen McKinsey company conducted online study, revealing that during July-December 2012, iPad captured 55% of online buzz in tablets category while Android tablets came second with 40% of all online conversations. In spite of low-cost tabs like Aakash and Reliance tabs, the Samsung Galaxy was number one tab among Android tablets. In smartphone category, Google’s Android OS is still on first position despite the fact that the OS’s share has dipped in the second half of 2011. The share slipped from 45% to 41%. The conversation share for Android OS based smartphones is still higher than Apple’s iPhone staying at 27% and Blackberry at 14%.
Regardless of the truth that Apple has never been that serious to promote and sell its products in India, iPad has already received great online conversation response leading to increasing number of sales. In last one year, the tablet market together with smartphone is stuffed by entries of low cost brands; especially for tablets, India has more than 20 domestic vendors who are promising to provide fully-packed tablets at as low as Rs 10,000. The year ahead for newcomer brands is not that suspicious if they too are going to get the same response that a consumer gets.
The game changer factor may be the lunch of 4G-Service later this year by Reliance Industries and their preference to either Android OS or Apple’s iPhone and iPad. They have plans to introduce high speed 4G tables with attractive price range. I guess Android based tablets. The Indian smartphone & tablet market is unpredictable and as unpredictable the consumers are. The study is also surmising whether Android OS could once again lead smartphone domain or iPhone, as usually happens, will win the betel!
