Do you have a perfect idea to create a phone app; an idea that nobody has ever thought of before? And are you sure that creating a phone app out of this idea will certainly hit stores?
But having a fantastic idea isn’t enough. Development is not an easy thing when it comes to creating phone apps, the actual designing and building process can trap you anywhere if you don’t have good knowledge. We are sharing the same knowledge by breaking up it into following 12 steps.
Step 1: Fixing a goal
Before you begin with creating phone apps, what you should readily have available is a well defined idea. But the idea totally lies on the goal of the app. Here, goal means having a purpose to realize or a mission to fulfill via your mobile app. You should have clear answers of what app’s core appeal is, problem it will solve or things it will simplify. Staying informed with the goal will help everyone moving faster with the development process.
Step 2: Creating sketches
To make mobile apps, developers need creating sketches. They are the foundation on which all your strategy will be based on. This step includes creating a visual concept of all features, rough layouts, and structure of the app. Having an approximate sketch to make a mobile app will help every member of the team realizes what his/her mission is. These sketches will work as reference for the further development of project.
Step 3: Deeply researching the idea
When it comes to making mobile apps, it’s hard to survive without a dedicated research. The research aimed at building mobile app should serve four main purposes:
- Discover other apps aimed at same objective
- Get a design inspiration
- Decide on the technical requirements
- Set the operations for marketing and monetization
This is the point where outcome of the research may disappoint you. Because both the leading stores have more than 1.4 million apps and here, coming up with an idea that has not been thought of ever before is almost impossible. Whether you are building a mobile website or an app, there are strong chances that something like this does already exist.
But you must not get discouraged if there are already several other players in the ground. Your approach of how to create phone apps will differentiate you from others. Here, you should more focus on features / functions that make your product stronger than others. Spot out the weakest areas of competitors’ apps and see how you can make them better in your application. Focus on the top of the players in your area and group all the weaker things in their apps you can perk up in your offering. As I said, your approach to how do you make a mobile app will set you apart from others and indeed, this approach depends on how deeply you can see the mistakes of your competitors.
It is also the time when you should consider about all the technical aspects to create phone apps. Often time, most of the technologies are already available for the functionalities you want to implement to your product. But in some cases, custom development of things is also required. This will help you build your app with understanding the feasibility of available technologies and new things that have to be implemented. The research can be extended to studying legal part of the project including having the best of the answers for copyright and privacy related queries.
Other things that are equally important while building a mobile website or app are marketing and monetization. Marketing your app is not an easy operation. Many apps fail just because of being based on weaker or no market plan. You must have clear explanations of things you will include in app marketing strategy. To market your app successfully, it is necessary you first determine your niche, and then identify the ways to reach your audience. Once you have set in app marketing strategy, now think how you are going to make money out of it. You have to decide on a model that fits your app-type, domain and the purpose aimed at.
Step 4: Creating a Wire-frame and Storyboard
This is the phase were your ideas/ imaginations are formed into a picture. In the process of building mobile app, wire-framing means creating prototypes or mock-ups of what the app will look like. The development agency either creates these prototypes on its own or takes help of online tools. These tools let developers drag and drop placeholders, graphics and buttons. While building mobile app wire-frame, creating a storyboard will also help a lot. This helps in creating the road-map of idea so that different screens connected with each other and navigation styles can visually be understood.
Step 5: Defining the Back End of Your Mobile App
Deciding on the back-end system is certainly a vital step to be taken before the actual process of creating mobile application begins. While creating mobile applications, defining of the back end often takes place once you have wire-frames in your hand. These wire-frames serve as the foundation of back-end structure. Here, things like drawing the sketch of servers, APIs and data diagrams are decided. They work as reference for the development team.
Step 6: Testing the prototype
Now come back to your wire-frames that are in fact the real foundation of creating mobile application. Ask your industry experts, colleagues, friends and family to review the mock-ups. Show them screens so that they can understand the application process flaws and dead-end links. You can also ask them to change something that you may have missed out.
Step 7: Building the Back End
After following the above mentioned six steps, you will have a lot of things clearly defined. Now you will need to start setting up servers, databases, APIs and storage solutions. Also, it is the right time to get developer account at stores to launch your app.
Step 8: Designing screens
In this step of creating mobile applications, individual high-resolutions screens are designed. These are based on wireframe which I mentioned in the step 6. Also do all the changes recommended by reviewers. Their feedbacks will help in forming perfect UI and UX.
Step 9: Testing the skins
This step of building a mobile app covers testing of skins designed by graphic designers. Don’t confuse this testing with what you did in the step 6. This is the point when you will see what the actual concept of your app looks like. Here you will need to checks whether all graphics, texts , etc are their places or not.
Step 10: Revising things
This will be the stage of building a mobile app where you have to take care of feedbacks and reviews you have collected from users after showing them the final skins of the app. You will have some new ideas that can help you apply a little more polish to your app idea. You can still make changes in the layout at this stage.
Step 11: Refining each and every detail
At this stage, you can continue with refining each and every detail of the app. For example if it’s an Android app, you will need to customize the app for different devices. It’s easy to install an app on Android device and check the functionalities but same doesn’t happen when it comes to iOS app. To test an iOS app, you will require a tool like TestFlight. It is the last mobile application development step.
Step 12: Releasing the app
If you have time limit set for releasing an app, consider different policies of different app stores. For example, Google allows you to instantly add an app to the Google Play store. On the other hand, the App Store of Apple takes sufficient time to publish an application. No one knows about the time-frame Apple requires publishing an application.
I hope this steps will prove to be vital for building any sort of mobile apps. Suggest me if you think I need to add something to these steps.
