Google knows how to dominate in market.

Google, at its recently held developer conference, showed Android One. With this new set of guidelines, Google wishes to penetrate deeply in the mobile markets of developing countries such as India and beyond. Android-One-standards can be technically accessed by any device maker. Consider that Google is all set to gain a larger footing in developing world’s markets and want to leave its competitors one more step behind in the race.

What exactly is Android One?

Android One is like a list of hardware specifications that will be supported by Android OS. Phones abiding by these specifications could run Android OS. It’s the way of Google to streamline the processes by giving device-makers a list of hardware that are supposed to be in phones that they want to run Android in. Devices based on this hardware-specs list-suit will receive the Android Phone title.
This move of Google appears to become a total dominating smartphone OS company also in emerging markets. Set by Google these standards will ensure phones with consistent experiencing, with an ease of updating software too.
With this new set of hardware specs, device manufacturers would be able to build better phones which are cheaper yet faster.

The way Google will win.

Fragmentation has been biggest issue since Android’s market has begun to grow. It generally affects Android developers who are helpless in coding a universal mobile app which is supported in the entire Android ecosystem. Whether it’s a single developer or an Android development company, they have been struggling to devise such Android app that runs similarly on all the devices running on Android.
Fragmentation is an even bigger problem in developing markets where mobile device manufacturers are giving inexpensive phones with less or no priority of updating them in future. These device makers keep moving to sell new devices and do never update the older ones at all.
However, Android’s KitKat has been a great help for Google fighting with fragmentation but Android One will go a step further by bringing cheaper phones to follow similar standards.
Google is trying to fix the fragmentation issue by establishing hardware specifications that every Android device is supposed to follow and by liming software changes that device makers often do.
This will also help Google make additional revenue because all the devices, regardless of their prices and makes, will be able to access the Play store and download/purchase apps. But providing Google Play access to all phones and removing fragmentation from the Android world aren’t Google’s only goals behind Android One. This new move will let Google keep its mobile OS dominating in the market.

What happened to Apple when it tried going cheaper?

Apple too tried to enter in developing world with its cheaper iPhone 5C and it did no wonder. This device is not as cheaper as twice-the-powerful Android devices which are already doing well in developing world markets. Even after Apple’s ‘cheap move’, Google’s Android still holds more than 78% market share and iOS takes only 17%.  Developing world is in fact already exploding with $200 average-powerful Android devices where Apple’s expensively cheaper iPhone hasn’t find its place.

A few months old report from IDC says that sub-$200 smartphone market grew to 42.6% in 2013 and more than 430 million of these devices were sold worldwide. Apple failed here even with its “less-expensive-tagged” iPhones.
With Android One, competition between Google and Apple is going to be much stiffer, particularly in developing world markets where Google is already a player and Apple has recently tried to enter.
